altSpring Has Sprung but the Stance Still Stands is a lot more than an alliterative masterpiece. It is also a deeply introspective look at the connections between seemingly random incidents in our lives by two talented young artists, Hilary Donald and Joe Sloan, an exhibition of inter-related art hosted in an unoccupied flat in Stockbridge.

The pair set up an interesting experiment at the beginning of the creative process. Each has communicated with the other via a joint blog, justlostinthought.wordpress.com, where they have posted ideas and inspiration for one another to investigate individually. All the discussion they’ve engaged in is viewable by visitors, who can also choose to add their own comments on the process.

A starting point for both was W.G. Sebald’s Rings of Saturn, a complex novel that deals with memories and man’s place in nature. Donald investigates the former, deconstructing a laptop bought from an ex who was one of the reasons she started to grind her teeth, leading to the recent loss of one. The tooth sits trapped in a glass jar; a series of four rather lovely prints of it hang on one wall. Most shockingly, copies of her dental records are displayed for anyone to read, charting her distress at the loss of the tooth and the fact that she smokes.

The exhibition is small, comprising only two rooms, but well worth a visit as an insight into the minds of two emerging artists.
