England is a play about identity, culture, journeys and communication - an understated, crisp and intelligent piece of drama, that takes the audience out of the space they’re in, out of themselves, and very subtly puts them somewhere else entirely. There are so many ideas at work in this carefully crafted script that it’s hard to pin down everything – the play deals simultaneously with the intimate and the universal, weaving the bigger concepts behind the piece into the personal story of the central character with such ease that the metaphors never become heavy handed. The tightly controlled performances from two excellent actors are crucial to the success of a script which could have been so easily over or under played. The choice of performance space is slightly odd, and the gimmick of making England ‘a play for galleries’ seems unnecessary to the whole experience, however, when a drama can capture you imagination so deftly that it takes you from Southwark Cathedral to Osaka in an hour, it really doesn’t matter where you’re actually sitting.
