Fast becoming Fringe favourites, The Penny Dreadfuls are back with their latest show, Aeneas Faversham Forever, which sees them leaving their sketch comedy roots (and one of their number) behind in favour of a comedy play. Retaining their Victoriana, they tell the story of legendary children’s author Rufus Hambledon (of the Jeremy Frog series) who becomes embroiled in a dastardly plot headed by the sinister Lucius Frost. Murder, mystery and monks become the order of the day in this incredibly slick adventure.
Since their 2007 show, Aeneas Faversham Returns, the trio have taken a gamble with their new direction. Thankfully the only thing they have lost in the move is the hit-and-miss nature of sketch shows, in favour of one that has tension, drive and comedy unlike any other at the Fringe. Thom, Dave and Humphrey have improved on the fantastic dynamic already in place in previous years and created wonderful characters to both play to their strengths and for laughs. Acknowledgement must also be given to the spectacular vignettes provided by the shadow puppets (the evil rabbit a particular highlight) that set the show further apart from the competition.
With every scene a winner, what’s been created is a gripping show, performed by three talented young performers that is, most importantly, refreshingly hilarious. Everything is in place to make 2008 their year.
