Potency Review PDF Print E-mail
Written by Rosie Whitehead
Potency is a fast paced and slick site-specific play in Edinburgh sports club. The disconcerting power of both America’s largest private army in Iraq and the media combines and contrasts with an energetic game of squash between a man and a woman. The woman is a high flying journalist and the man is head of the private army. He is, apparently, notoriously unresponsive to journalists and the only way he will talk to her is while playing squash. Their political and personal power games thrash out as a squash ball is smashed around the court and points are scored. Visually very threatening, the piece also gains power through its sharp dialogue and the clever twists to the plot. The audience learns just enough about both characters – his fanatical Christianity and erectile dysfunction, her family life and fierce ambition – to give the piece depth and interest beyond its social relevance. With finely tuned yet spontaneous acting and a unique setting, this play deserves to be seen by far larger audiences.
