Mark Watson’s 2007 show, Can I Briefly Talk To You About The Point Of Life?, was one of the best shows I’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing. Starting from within the audience and charming the 300 strong crowd he guided us through a beautifully crafted hour that was devastatingly funny. This year, it’s much of the shame, but with an audience more than doubled in size and a string of television appearances behind him.
Unfortunately and paradoxically his success has been to the detriment of his show. Again starting in the audience but, unlike last time, being bothered for autographs and photographs, indicating that he’s lost the anonymity that made the beginning of last year’s show such a triumph. Similarly, the size of the audience is a mixed blessing, as the intimacy of his comedy is lost, and his genius interaction with the audience all but disappeared.
There are thankfully moments of sheer brilliance: his theories on Cliff Richard’s longevity leaving everyone crying with laughter. He is one of stand-up’s greatest assets, but has not yet worked out how to adapt to his newfound and well deserved celebrity status.
