Deborah Frances-White Review PDF Print E-mail

Deborah Frances- White new offering this year teaches us how to attract the opposite sex, in a highly amusing show which combines stand up with a masterclass in the rules of flirtation. The performer takes on the often absurd and formulaic rules proffered in self-help books and creates her own light-hearted views on male and female sexuality. Her observations on hetrosexual behaviour may seem intially two dimensional, but when put in the context of her colourful ancedotes and demonstrated live on stage, they are revealed to be, all too close to real life. This is most humourously displayed when she dresses up two men in bras and asks them to try and undo each others garments using one hand. What ensues is a gladitorial display of male sportsmanship revealing, in a jokey manner, their instinctive competitiveness.

Using Neil Strauss's much talked about book The Game, Frances- White deconstructs its pseudo-science and reveals its absurdities, which at its core, bear little witness to normal communication. This is memorably explored when Frances-White selects snippets from the book and comes up with a ridiculous male casanova figure, who dresses up in a plumed hat and tries to attract a woman in a bar by pretending to be gay. This of course, deliberately misinterprets the book, but on a serious level reveals how this type of writing has the ability to tap into our insecurities and feed us with nonsense. In contrast this show offers us an unmysterious alternative to making oneself desirable, which does away with trickery and theatrical props! She is a likeable and confident performer who engages with the audience in an intelligent and non-threatening manner, leaving you wanting more.
