The Reduced Edinburgh Impro Show Review PDF Print E-mail

Playing in the darkness of the Pleasance Courtyard Cavern, the Reduced Edinburgh Impro Show, are marking themselves out as one of the best improvised comedy groups at this years festival.

The premise of the hour is that audience members pick shows from pages torn out of the fringe program, and the team of improvisers act out ad hoc performances of those shows.

In reality, the scenes and scenarios created seldom have any basis in what the show is actually like. The performers would of course struggle to parody every show chosen from the gargantuan program, and instead tend use just the name as a starting point. However, the exercise serves as a good stimulation of performers imaginations, with the diverse nomenclature of fringe shows offering a good basis for comedy.

The whole show is bookended by a two part musical, in tonight's show entitled "A Revenger’s Tragedy". The team sing well, and the improvised keyboard accompaniment is always appropriate, even if the exercise does not reach the heights of improvised musical specialists One Night Stand.

Some sections of the show seem a little overlong, taking ideas a little beyond their sell by date. However, the cast are accomplished improvisers, amusing and almost always assured.

At the end of the night only one question remains: What would they do if their own show was chosen from the programme?
