Gamarjobat Review PDF Print E-mail
Written by Rosie Whitehead
Complete with pink and blond mohicans, the well known faces of Japanese comedy duo Gamarjobat are back for another show of physical comedy and audience interaction. Their style is cheeky and charming and they have an unsurpassable knack of convincing their audience to make silly noises and join in. The first part of the show comprises of their well honed set of such tricks as making little red balls disappear or multiply, making a suitcase appear stuck in the air and competing with each other for the audience’s favour. Unfortunately, they then move from enjoyable, light entertainment to an attempt at a sustained storyline of love and revenge. Their style simply doesn’t work with this idea. A cowboy falls in love with and seduces a girl in a saloon, her boyfriend returns and the two men fight, the cowboy gets the girl, shoots the boyfriend and all ends in pools of blood and sweat. Their physical comedy with no words seems at odds with the style and the same jokes are repeated a few too many times. The two performers are undeniably talented but, perhaps, should not try to warp something uncomplicated and fun into meaningful narrative.
