Master storyteller Matthew Bourne sees his productions as a ‘way in’ to dance. Judging by his latest offering, the biggest selling show in the Edinburgh International Festival’s history, that way-in will not only introduce you to his world, but embrace and engross you within it.
Adapting Oscar Wilde’s famously dark story, Bourne has updated it and brought it into sharp focus within the modern world by making a statement on the current culture of celebrity. Dorian, a waiter-cum-perfume model is welcomed onto the celebrity circuit with sex on tap and sycophants surrounding his every waking moment. Once the tale takes a turn for the worst, our anti-hero’s exploits and escapades descend into murder and tyranny, with an eerie doppelganger (perhaps not used to its full potential) taking a pivotal role.
The beautiful and incredibly talented cast; haunting, modern and creative original music; combined with brilliantly inventive staging culminate in a devastatingly powerful show oozing sex and style but with, most importantly, substance.
