The Bjorn Identity was a one-off show by Scott Mills, and despite an admirable effort, that may be for the best. Scott Mills entertained with a camp, pantomime-style humour, decked out in a dazzling white suit with smile to match. Bringing together a questionable medley of Abba songs with the haphazard parody of The Bourne Identity, Mills and his anonymous cast of masked Radio 1 representatives had the audience laughing throughout, even if they weren’t entirely sure why.
Requiring a couple of prompts from members of the Radio 1 team at the front of the audience, Mills’ show was far from polished, but its charm lay in its slightly sketchy and spontaneous feel. The more of a Radio 1 fan you are, the more entertaining you’d have found it, as the majority of the jokes inevitably revolve around the team (Sarah Cox as the love interest, Zane Lowe, Vernon Kay, not to mention the popular assassination of Chris Moyles).
Taking on the role of the amnesiac, trained assassin-cum-Swedish superstar, Jason Bjorn, Mills performed and sang with a commendable confidence and spirit for someone quite clearly out of their comfort zone, making up for what he lacked in talent with an infectious enthusiasm. This was a fun hour of cheesy humour, makeshift props, over-acting and Abba-fuelled entertainment, although I’d advise Mills not to give up the day job just yet.
