Running for 90 minutes and at only five quid a ticket, The Lunchtime Club 2011 brings to the table not just great value for money, but a delectable assortment of emerging comedic talent. This festival institution is known for its career-propelling potential, with the likes of Joe Lycett and Tom Rosenthal acting as exemplary beneficiaries. Now, in this year’s incarnation, five fresh-faced comedians take to the Tron’s mic to try their luck.
Joe Wells, Fin Taylor, John Kearns, Suzi Ruffell and Max Dickins make a strong line-up. Covering such diverse topics as quiche-fuelled racism, ropey relationships, how to lay successful Nazi traps and otter sponsorships, there really is something here for everyone. And, with Fin Taylor acting as MC, the pace is swift and the acts are fittingly purposeful.
Each of the performers seemed to thrive in their allotted time, remaining sharp and original. Dickins’ observational humour is light and had a childish tomfoolery about it, Ruffell’s social commentaries were self-deprecating but wickedly funny, and Taylor stumbled upon comic gold when he happened to ask the one porn distributer in the audience what his profession was. The hat, however, has to be doffed to the final two Lunchtime Club members to take the stage: Joe Wells and John Kearns. Each had a completely unique approach – one erudite, the other barmy – but they each managed to steal the show.
All in all, a great lunchtime.
