Anyone wanting to tear Diane Spencer a new one might struggle. You see, she’s already done so and she’s ready to share.
Not even halfway through the show, I realize I can’t keep laughing this sincerely; my cheeks are burning and I simply won’t make it at this rate. Yet tucked away in the aptly named ‘Wee Room' -- a room I imagine might prove painfully intimate for even the most seasoned comedian – it’s impossible to resist the young Di Spencer (no, not that one, dontchaknow) as she deftly directs her audience through an hour-long show that tosses together a whole recipe of wrong to produce something startlingly right.
Spencer proves to be a textbook example of ‘someone who lights up a room' as she stands against a black curtain in a room that feels only slightly larger than your living room and shares horror stories of constipation, ‘hobocops,’ and some seriously questionable uses of food. Sure, a pretty girl who can combine self-deprecation and dirty humour isn’t exactly revolutionary, but Spencer’s particular blend of wit and messy red braids is fresh and engaging. That said, if you don’t like a cute girl who really knows how to construct a raunchy, clever narrative (emphasis on the raunchy), Spencer might not be your cup of tea.
‘The problem with me is I give too much,’ she says at one point with a wry smile. Indeed, she does, but these are gifts of which you definitely want be on the receiving end. From Tarantino to Tolkien to teabagging, Spencer tells a fabulous, ‘no-that-can’t-be-true’ tale that will leave you in stitches and a little in love.
