altChris Martin is mentioned in Fringe buzz as ‘the next big thing’, ‘up and coming’, ‘a great new talent’ and various other clichés –as a result I was prepared to be disappointed by the hype.

I was not.

Anecdotes about how crazy his mates are and stories that could come out of your own house party history had the audience roaring with laughter – add to this a crazy family and some cats and you have fantastic comedy. He is relatively inoffensive and I was a little charmed if I’m honest –and I certainly was not the only one there.

This was Chris’s first show of the run, but there were no nerves or the sense he was practicing his material as I have seen at other gigs – we were shown the complete, finished masterpiece. He struck the perfect balance between accomplished humour and improvised reaction to the audience. Plus,f a full house on an opening night is incredibly impressive.

One criticism – I had heard one joke before,  and I’m assuming I must have caught part of his act on TV or YouTube. This did disappoint, as I think the Fringe should really be an avenue for new material, but this was one drawback in what can only be classed as a hilarious viewing of (sorry, just the one more cliché…..) - ‘a rising star’.
