altFor anyone seeking thrilling adventure, unbridled imagination and the odd power ballad from a comedy sketch show, then Shamblehouse will prove to be just the ticket. Performed upon by one third of Fringe favourites ‘The Penny Dreadfuls,’ David Reed, the Pleasance Two stage looks set to be packed to its rafters for the next month—so get your ticket quickly.

One-man shows are notoriously difficult for keeping up the ante, with most audience members losing interest halfway through as the energy levels and jokes plateau. Not so with Reed.  Dodging and diving between characters as deftly as can be hoped for, he doesn’t appear to even pause for breath, let alone drop one of the many balls he simultaneously keeps in the air.

With equal aplomb he takes child’s play head-on as sticky-fingered schoolboy Steve, who ‘whuvs ce Vikings’, while also mastering the accents of Whoopee Goldberg, Morgan Freeman, and my personal favourite Hoggle, the goblin from Labyrinth. The less said about his South-African accent the better.

This show is deliciously mad, as proven by the standout performances that came, respectively, from a donut and an Antiques dealer who must destroy and taxidermy an all-too-alive chocolate lab pup in order to save his shop. This is batty entertainment for all ages—enjoy!
