Tom is funny, that’s a good start. He tells his life story in a sort of pseudo blockbuster action movie, like he’s being the man he wishes he were and mocking the person he really is. That’s an overly complicated way of explaining it, and the style isn’t why you ought to go see his show.
He transparently plays out a classic stand-up procedure of easing us in with a few basic laughs and a bit of audience participation before rolling into the plot. He’s just naturally funny; that is obvious and very likeable, I get the vibe he just does the stuff HE’d find funny. It felt like the show was something that people would muck about with in the pub. An example: Going through LOVE IT! magazine, Tom Bell is young enough to know what we really do get up to, though he’s older than he looks (he covers that in the show).
His childhood lover and current girlfriend is Jennifer Aniston and his butler is Michael Caine, or so he says. He talks about his local co-op, which he likes because it’s open ‘til 10pm.
I’m going to go a bit out there, but I’m placing a vote/pledge for Best Joke of Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2011: “Worse things have happened at C Venues.” (As in, worse things have happened at sea – Bah! Gags!!) Can we all start saying that, please?
Tom Bell Begins, Just the Tonic @ The Tron, 10-28 Aug, 3.40 pm
