altSally-Anne has an endearingly chirpy and chatty presence that is currently to be found at The Stand. While her natural perkiness suggests her jokes are equally innocent and upbeat, her butter-wouldn’t-melt façade is just that - a convenient disguise.

While she is looking forward to getting old, it turns out this that is less to do with her excitement at spending her days baking and making strawberry jam, and more to do with her keenness to piss in the lukewarm bathwater before her elderly husband hops in after her.

Generally, her warmth and likeability make her more sordid jokes and bitchy slights appear all the more edgy and comical. But, more than not, her jests just seem too out of character to feel anything but awkward when you watch her deliver them. Many of her segments struggle in this way, but none more so than when she talks about the envious comments she receives for being ‘too thin.’ This particular routine comes off as boastful and petty, somewhat tainting her otherwise delightful demeanor.

Her material is not helped either by her incredibly fast pace of delivery - with a joke a minute, you will her to slow down and make more of less. Her yoga fable is the only anecdote that she takes sufficient time to elucidate, and it is consequentially the sparkling jewel in her show’s crown.

A hit and miss kind of a show.
