The best kept secret in comedy? Well, you may not immediately recognise his name, but appearances on Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow and Dave's One Night Stand ensure that many will recognise his face and recall his fast-paced and often high-pitched delivery. Having no particular feelings either way, despite these prior televisual encounters, I was quickly won over and, while he isn’t necessarily the best kept secret, Andrew Lawrence is certainly one of the best stand-ups I have seen at the Fringe so far.
Lawrence's subject matter comprises the everyday irritations and absurdities of life, but it is the wry, bitter and articulate delivery (any comedian who drops words like insouciant so, well, insouciantly is okay by me) that transforms it into something rather special.
Lawrence engages well with his audience, but his show does not depend too heavily on this; although, with a gem like this man, who worked in a 'niche' television market that turned out to be not Babestation but the Caravan Channel, one would have forgiven him for dwelling more on this portion of his act.
A thoroughly good show, and one that left me gently humming Lawrence's 'Get Out of My Way' song all the way home.
