altFirst penis of the Fringe! – Having not booked in to see Jerry Sadowitz this year, I thought my 2011 experience might lack the unexpected introduction of a penis during a set but Andrew Doyle proved me wrong!

Finding out that Doyle’s show had been directed by Scott Capurro was like finding out the tooth fairy was only my mum. I was so disappointed by Capurro’s own performance the day before, and had low expectations.

However, I decided to approach this show with an open mind and not consider the two alongside each other ….  which proved difficult as Doyle’s show had certain trademarks recognisable from Capurro. Use of the word ‘judgey’ for one, and being a sexual predator for another – although Doyle did it with far more charisma than Capurro had and at least had the good taste to select someone over 18.

Aside from these off-putting similarities, Doyle is a refreshing comedian, covering a controversial range of topics around sexual depravity with just the right amount of audience interaction alongside some smooth set-ups and appropriately placed slides.

However, I couldn’t help feeling that where the material lacked some substance, Doyle was trying to make up for it by using shock tactics. This is lazy comedy and from previous reviews, I know that Doyle is considered quite a talent so this seems like a cop out.

To give Doyle his due, there are issues with the venue, as this show relies on a clear view of the screen and most don’t get this. There were some real gems in there, but you had to search for them – my advice to Doyle, if he asked, would be to make his own path, direct his own show, and retain his originality.
