Craig Hill bursts on to the stage and out into the audience, throwing himself into a series of fantastic moves to Lady Gaga’s Born This Way. If producers are looking for entries for this year’s Strictly Come Dancing, Hill would be a brilliant choice. He claims he wants to dispel any doubts over his sexuality. With a reputation as solid as his, there’s really no need.
Within minutes, he’s asking the lads in the front row if they’ve ever seen his show before. They haven’t, hence why they’ve sat themselves right in the firing line. Upon finding out that his first victim is from a small town in Fife, it’s open season. Impressions of locals flow thick and fast, as well as a diatribe on the guy’s chosen profession: male nurse. Hill’s invective is cutting and witty, and every fresh insult is softened with a gentle tone and an “I’m only kidding.”
The majority of the show is built from the banter that another comedian might use briefly at the beginning of his or her show: “Where are you from?” It’s impressive how quick Hill is to launch into a story or joke about each new place the audience come up with, and everybody watching seems to be happy to go along with the joke. Of course, he’s hardest on his own hometown of Glasgow, so nobody feels left out.
Although the act becomes a bit repetitive after a while – there are only so many times you can hear “I’m only kidding” before it rings hollow – there is no doubt that Hill is a quick-witted, funny man and provides excellent value for money when you consider how many laughs he packs into this happy-go-lucky and naughty hour of comedy.
