The World @ St George’s West
6-31 August, 21.00
With their relentless energy and irresistable rountines, this dance troupe sets a firework beneath the Fringe ahead of the Bank of Scotland display at the end of the Festival.
Capoeira Knights is a music and dance performance that brings a piece of the favelas to the heart of Edinburgh. Capoeira means ‘the dance that kills’ and was born when African slaves combined dance with the practice of martial arts to disguise their training from their masters. The incredible mix of gymnastic and combat moves pushes the limit of what the human body can do as the performers fly across the stage.
The show tells the story of the birth of Capoeira and highlights the dancers’ hopes that dance may yet help Brazilians resolve their problems with drugs and guns. The charismatic performers, which include a live band and singers, recreate street fights before moving into the birth of samba with rhythmic feel good tunes that had people dancing in the aisles.
A true taste of the best of Brazil the show provides a welcome escape from the dour Edinburgh weather that will keep you smiling and dancing for some time afterwards.
