The Zoo Southside
August 7-31 (ex. 17,24) 16:30
For once, the promotional description of a show is justified. This piece by award-winning dance troupe 2FaCeD is bold, slick and expressive, not to mention athletically stunning.
Billed as an exploration of modern malaise, of the overcrowding and sensory overload which leaves us metaphorically “gasping for air,” this electrified, sharp performance captures urban tension, frustration and craziness perfectly. If London street gangs could express their mental states through dance this would be the result.
Spectacular, wonderfully expressive and visceral moves synchronise satisfyingly with the outstandingly appropriate original score. The performers execute near-flawlessly, seeming to have an instinctive understanding and awareness of one another.
I particularly appreciated the conjuring of a spirit of danger and competition which is lacking in so much performance breaking. The energy and anger displayed create a menacing, apocalyptic mood, yet this is conveyed via incredible gracefulness and physical skill. Spontaneous whoops, roars and snarls of approval from the audience interspersed each explosive sequence.
If you know anyone who thinks dance performance is a bit poncey, change their perspective with this fast, furious and testosterone-fuelled work.
