The Voodoo Rooms
12-23rd August (ex. 17, 18), 22.00
Prepare to be transported to 1930’s Berlin, a world sexy, glamorous and debauched, with dazzling lights and colours, feathers and ribbons, jewelled gloves and fishnets, satin and suspenders.
Des O’Conner smoulders with sex appeal, whispering seductively into the microphone and whipping the audience into a frenzy of delight (‘ooh, sounds like someone just came’).
He presents us with a plethora of acts – they range from the sexy sequin-clad dancers, seductively slipping out of their feathered costumes, down to corsets and nipple-tassles, to accomplished dancers and singers. The stripping is not gratuitous (and it seems almost an insult to call it that as many of them do not, and if so it is merely suggestive, wriggling coyly off stage before the final tug of the corset strings); it is satirical and intelligent, and hilarious fun.
The acts are all varied and performed in cabaret style-succession, and the plethora of colours and music titillate your senses and prevent even the slightest onset of boredom. All of the acts were hugely talented and at the top of their game. Despite a few moments where there seemed to be slight awkwardness among the performers, they seemed to have real fun with what they were doing, particularly during the laugh-‘til-you-cry 1890s London scene on Hampstead Heath. Frisky and Mannish, the final act, ended the show on an uproarious, witty and decidedly sexy note.
The enthusiasm was contagious, and I must admit that it was with some apprehension that I entered the room. After two and a half hours, I didn’t want it to be over. Go with a partner, go with your friends, even go on your own – just make sure that you go!
