Showcasing a complete range of contemporary dance movement, the production is at times almost too ambitious and its main weakness lies in the abrupt, incongruent transitions between the different pieces within the show. However, the dancing and the choreography are creative and meaningful, as the majority of the dancers manage to engage the audience through expressive, corporeal storytelling.
Groups such as BodyStories/Teresa Fellion Dance and project: Smith & Peluso deliver performances that weave a captivating elegance, humour and attitude into their choreography. Ballroom Dancing For Tough Guys adds sparkle with an elegant self-parody performed to songs such as Only You, serving to emphasise the distinctive New York foundations that tie this diverse showcase together. The Ragamala Dance group adds another cultural layer to the showcase and is performed with precision and a graceful, poetic energy that one cannot help but feel is slightly tainted by the dramatic English voice-over translation that accompanies the dancers’ movement.
Anyone looking for a taster of contemporary dance and a sample of what America’s finest dance groups have to offer would enjoy this accomplished and compelling show.
