I had the pleasure of seeing a multi-culturally-inspired a cappella group called Voices last night in an underrated show at New Town Theatre.
This amazing mixture of eight performers can only be understood by referring to the introduction by the director of the show and vocalist, Philip Hamilton. Every member of the ‘crew’ was from one country, via another, and each has drawn from a rich multinational heritage. India meets Cameroon and Israel mixes with Madagascar, and the result is a completely unique and utterly fascinating sound – one which I doubt is repeated anywhere in the world.
It wouldn’t really be fair to pick individuals out of this exceptionally skilled group, but on a personal note, our favourites were Noa, Philip himself and the most amazing beatboxer I have ever heard – Anointed S. I certainly was not expecting Optimus Prime and his Transforming chums to appear in the middle of the show and it was a laugh-out-loud moment for us.
Interestingly, straight after the show, Philip Hamilton was approached by Britain’s Got Talent headhunters. It’s not the right vehicle for them, they’ll make them do terrible pop mash-ups and Philip’s integrity would never allow this, even though it would immediately widen awareness of this amazing group. I’m glad to say he turned them down.
There are only 4 more nights of this show left – please go and see it – you wouldn’t see anything like it anywhere else and you’d really miss out.
