Engulfed by the hubbub of the Pleasance Courtyard, for an hour Invisible Show II makes you privy to the secret lives of those embedded in the milling crowds, with a set of headphones and your keen eyes your only guides.
Set to dream-like music, the action begins with a crackling voice appearing over the headphones mid-conversation on a mobile. Looking for the face behind the fretful exchange is like looking for a needle in a haystack: you can see every headphone-clad figure scanning the crowd, straining to find their man. Spotting the performers is part of the joy of the Invisible Show II, and throws up all sorts of brilliant mental games and intrigues.
Revolving around four actors taking on multiple roles, who mingle as part of the real time Pleasance crowd, we listen in to several vignettes of peoples’ lives while the rest of the Festival-goers are completely unaware. The emotions and personal dramas that these actors reveal feel all the more raw and real in this very ordinary setting, the fourth wall apparently crumbling into the cobbles of the courtyard. Tales of anguish, budding romance, disappointment and love unfold before us in a deeply moving and frank fashion. Flickering from a couple basking in their six-hour romance, with quite possibly the funniest banter I’ve heard this festival, to a woman facing the wall breaking the news to her friend that she has terminal cancer, these slivers of conversations could so easily be real.
I wholeheartedly recommend this show; your experience of the courtyard will never be the same again! Magnificent.
